How to cook rice is very simple. But for many of us it can be intimidating. This recipe makes perfectly fluffy rice every time.
This quantity will serve 3 – 4 people.
Here's how.
Bring 2 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of salt to a rapid boil in a pot. Stir 1 cup of rice into the boiling water.
Return the water to a boil, reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cover the pot with a lid. Cook the rice without lifting the lid (no peeking!) for 15 – 20 minutes. Lifting the lid will allow steam to escape and the rice will not cook in the proper time.
After 15 minutes, check the rice. The rice should have steam holes when it is done. Place the lid back on the pot and let stand for 5 – 10 minutes more. Then fluff the rick with a fork.
This recipe will work for long grain rice, like Basmati. Basmati rice is from India and widely available in grocery stores. If you are cooking brown rice or wild rice, increase both the water (2 ¼) and cooking time (30 – 40 minutes). Check the rice after 30 minutes.
That’s it - perfect every time! So the next time you have rice as part of your meal plan, give this method a try.
NOTE: 2:1 is the magic ratio for cooking rice. So to double this recipe, add 2 cups of rice to 4 cups of water, etc.
